From the First Headset to a New Reality: How VR Changed the World, and What We're Building Next

Some ideas are so far ahead of their time that the world manages to forget them, mock them, and rediscover them all over again. Virtual reality is one of them. For decades it lived in science fiction, arcades, and research labs. Then in the garage of one obsessive engineer. And today it lives in your hands – in your phone, your tablet, on your Apple TV screen. And in what we're building at Anydream.

Let's walk this road together – from the very first prototype to the moment when technological capability finally caught up with human imagination.

2011: A Garage, a Soldering Iron, and a Big Idea

The story of modern consumer VR doesn't begin in a corporate lab. It begins with an eighteen-year-old named Palmer Luckey, who enrolled at the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California (USC ICT) in 2011, and, back home, started assembling headset prototypes in his spare time. By the time he met legendary game developer John Carmack in 2012, Luckey was already on his sixth prototype.

Around the same time, Sony released the HMZ-T1 – a personal 3D viewer that was technically a head-mounted display, though aimed more at home cinema than full-blown VR. The market was stirring. The idea of "putting the world on your head" no longer sounded like pure fantasy.

2012: Kickstarter Changes the Rules

In 2012, Palmer Luckey launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Oculus Rift, and raised roughly $2.4 million against a $250,000 goal. This wasn't just a commercial win. It was a signal: the industry, investors, and hundreds of thousands of people wanted VR to exist.

Carmack saw the prototype and immediately joined the team. Game developers got dev kits. A community formed. Momentum built.

2014: Facebook Places Its Bet

In March 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion. Mark Zuckerberg called VR "the next computing platform." Skeptics raised their eyebrows. But the deal meant one thing: serious money had entered the space, and with it, serious engineering resources.

For the industry, it marked the start of a new era.

2016: The Consumer Revolution (and the First Disappointment)

2016 was the year VR hit store shelves – with three major players launching at once:

  • Oculus Rift (a PC-tethered headset with Touch controllers)
  • HTC Vive (a Valve and HTC collaboration with room-scale tracking)
  • PlayStation VR (the most accessible entry point for PS4 owners)

It was a triumph of engineering. But it was also the industry's first hard lesson: users weren't ready to deal with cables, high-end PCs, and rearranging their living room furniture for twenty minutes of gameplay. Mass adoption didn't happen. VR stayed niche.

The problem wasn't the idea – it was the infrastructure.

2017–2019: Standalone Changes Everything

The industry drew the right conclusion and started moving toward standalone headsets – no wires, no external computers, no complicated setup.

In 2018, the Oculus Go arrived – the first truly standalone headset for a mainstream audience. Simple, lightweight, affordable. Then in 2019 came the Oculus Quest – with six degrees of freedom, hand tracking, and a full app library.

The Quest was the turning point. Not because it was perfect, but because it was good enough for people to actually use it every day.

2020–2022: The Pandemic and the Presence Effect

Oculus Quest 2 launched in October 2020 – cheaper than its predecessor, more powerful, and lighter. The COVID-19 pandemic accidentally became the best advertisement VR ever had: people stuck at home were looking for new ways to connect, be entertained, and get things done. Sales surged.

Meta (rebranded from Facebook in 2021) announced its metaverse vision and poured billions into development. "Metaverse" became the buzzword of the year. Competitors followed suit: Microsoft, Sony, HTC, ByteDance (Pico) – all ramped up their presence.

Meanwhile, a separate and important trend was taking shape: mixed reality (MR). The line between the virtual and the physical began to blur.

2023: The Year Everything Shifted

Two events defined 2023 as a turning point for the entire industry.

Meta Quest 3 brought an improved MR mode, a slimmer form factor, and the ability to see the real world through passthrough cameras – all for $499, putting it within reach of a wide audience.

But the bigger news was Apple's announcement of the Vision Pro at WWDC 2023. Apple – a company that never enters a market first, but always changes it – unveiled a device with display resolution that had previously seemed impossible in a portable form factor. Running visionOS. Integrated into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac ecosystem. Controlled by gesture and eye tracking.

The industry's reaction was unanimous: this isn't just a new gadget. It's a new category.

2024: Vision Pro in Users' Hands

In February 2024, Apple Vision Pro went on sale at $3,499. Reviews were split: some called it the most impressive device they'd ever held. Others pointed to the weight, the price, and a library that was still growing.

But that's not the point. The point is that Apple set a new standard, and developers, studios, and platforms began aligning themselves around it.

Spatial computing stopped being a concept. It became reality.

Where the Market Is Headed: The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Analysts broadly agree that the AR/VR market is on the cusp of significant growth. Various projections suggest the combined spatial computing market could reach hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the decade. The key drivers:

  • Falling costs for display and sensor manufacturing
  • Rising power of mobile chips (Apple's M-series, Snapdragon XR)
  • Expanding 5G infrastructure
  • A generation of users who grew up on immersive gaming
  • Enterprise adoption across training, design, healthcare, and architecture

But numbers are context. The real question is always the same: what will people actually watch and experience inside these devices?

Anydream: We Don't Build Hardware – We Build Worlds

When Palmer Luckey was soldering his sixth prototype in 2012, he was solving the problem of the device. Today, that problem is largely solved. iPhone 15 Pro, iPad Pro, Apple TV 4K, Apple Vision Pro – these aren't prototypes. They're a mature, powerful ecosystem with hundreds of millions of users.

That's exactly why Anydream has focused on something different from the start – on content.

What's Next for Anydream

We're actively developing expansion across new platforms. Our focus is on Android, Android TV, and Meta Quest – devices with a combined audience of hundreds of millions of people. Every new platform isn't just a technical port. It's a new audience, a new context, new possibilities for storytelling.

At the same time, we keep building new interactive worlds. Each one is its own universe – with its own atmosphere, its own internal logic, its own emotional core.

The story of VR has been building to this moment for more than a decade. The technology has finally caught up with the imagination. And right now, when the barrier to entry has dropped, when the devices are mainstream, when users are ready for immersive experience – what matters most is what they find inside.
